Hard Days for Lightweight Plastics
Plastic waste may cause an environmental catastrophe. How can we avoid it
Europe has symbolically declared a “war” on plastic waste. The reason is that the wide use of plastic leads to massive environmental pollution. And if serious measures are not taken, in 2050, the weight of plastic waste in oceans will be more than that of fish, experts alarm.
Plastic has become one of the most popular materials worldwide because it combines good functionality, lightness and low production costs. Its use has increased tremendously, and if there is no adequate waste management, one day, an environmental catastrophe is to take place.
The ban on certain types of plastic products was the first measure that was taken. But is this the solution that will save the planet? And what about other plastic waste? Can we shut down a whole giant industry? Is there anything that can replace it? How will its recycling develop? Why before starting a new production, mankind does not ask itself first what will happen with the waste and how it could be utilised? Is it reusable?
Currently, there is no simple answer to the plastic waste issue. But if there is a problem, we must find a solution that will work on all occasions and will include all plastic waste.
We talk about these issues with entrepreneurs who produce or use plastic packages.
