Today the general need for speedy delivery of commodities and raw materials is higher than it has ever been before.
In response to the surging demand for fast and environmentally sustainable freight solutions, BMF Port Burgas introduces a game-changing addition to the Bulgarian maritime landscape - BMF Dry Port Sofia. This innovative intermodal container terminal near Sofia promises to revolutionize the delivery of commodities and raw materials in Bulgaria, offering fast, reliable, and eco-friendly transport solutions tailored to meet the evolving needs of today's consumers and businesses.
Meanwhile, the expectations for companies to implement green practices are at their highest. Reduction of hazardous emissions is primary focus for the EU which leads to cargo freight to be shifted to railways. The current tendencies put pressure on the ports to be more sufficiently integrated into the existing railway network and offer more multimodal solutions to their clients.
BMF Dry Port Sofia brings to the table something that the Bulgarian maritime transport has been running behind on – regular intermodal deliveries from Burgas Port to the hinterland. It is a globally established practice for port operators to have a so called “Dry Port” placed on a strategic location on the mainland. Thus, the intermodal terminal was constructed in Industrial Park Sofia – Bozhurishte – a busy economic zone with high potential for interchange of the first and last miles.
BMF Dry Port Sofia is designed to boost the attractiveness and the container handling capacity for the port. The Dry Port has been licensed as part of the territory of BMF Port Burgas, so it respectively offers bonded warehousing for its customers. Currently, it is primarily being used for door-to-door deliveries for one of the major clients to the port. Import and export containers are transported via regular railway service, running 1 to 2 trains per week. The terminal has potential to be used as a Drop-off Depot not only for containers, but also for trailers, semi-trailers and etc. units. Its location makes it a strategic spot for various deliveries between Central Europe and the outskirts of the EU.
Multimodal spots facilitate the smooth flow of goods, support economic development on both local and global scales, and reinforce Bulgaria's position as a key player in the European maritime landscape. Deployment of multiple distribution points on strategic spots throughout the country is essential and underscores the pivotal role of multimodal transportation hubs in modern logistics systems.
